A hot saucepan can leave more than a temporary mark on a benchtop. Sudden temperature changes may cause discolouration, surface dulling, hairline cracks or damage around seams and cut-outs. The risk depends on the material, the condition of the surface and how quickly heat is transferred from cookware to the countertop.

The underside of cookware can also be a problem. Match protection to the countertop material
Quartz surfaces are engineered from stone particles and binding resins, so they are durable but not heat-proof. A hot pot should go onto a thick trivet rather than directly onto the slab. Direct heat can mark the resin, cause colour changes or create cracks that are difficult to repair invisibly. The same care applies to integrated quartz sinks and narrow areas beside a cooktop.
Granite generally tolerates brief contact with moderate heat better than quartz, but that does not make it immune to thermal shock. Marble is comparatively vulnerable to scratching, staining and heat-related surface changes, so it deserves consistent protection rather than occasional caution.
Soapstone has good heat resistance and is often chosen for its soft, tactile finish, yet its performance should not be confused with unlimited heat tolerance. It can still suffer from thermal shock or marks around vulnerable areas. Choose reliable trivets and heat barriers
